Chocolate Orpington
The deep rich color of a Chocolate Orpington stands out among other birds and is an eye catcher to any poultry enthusiast. Chocolate is not a standard color but the requirements are that plumage, legs, beak and eyes are all chocolate.
The Chocolate gene is a sex linked recessive mutant gene. Females cannot hide the gene, so if they possess it they will appear Chocolate. Males can be carriers and require two copies to be visually Chocolate. If they only have one copy they are said to be "split to Chocolate".
The color exists in both Large Fowl and Bantam and is fast becoming a popular color due to its uniqueness. The Large Fowl Chocolate Orpington is extremely rare in America.
Our girls are paired with a Chocolate Cuckoo rooster (chocolate and white striped). Because our rooster is single barred (see poultry color genetics page), both solid Chocolate and Chocolate Cuckoo chicks can be produced with this pairing.
